"THE LOCAL GROUP" the local astronomy club meets monthly at the Nature Center. These are lecture meetings and are open to the public. Call Laverne Booth at 259-3284 for further information.

SIERRA CLUB HIKES

• Towsley Park to Mentryville  - Sun, Feb 25, 9AM
Leaders: Henry Schultz (284-5613) Casey Bialas (251-4619).  Strenuous 10 mi hike with car shuttle. Initial 1500’ climb affords panoramic view of Santa Clarita Woodlands and Valley; ends in historic Mentryville, restored oil boomtown. Meet 9 am at entrance to Ed Davis/Towsley Cyn Park. Exit I-5 at Calgrove, turn left to The Old Rd, Then left to park entrance. Car shuttle required. Bring 2 qts water, lunch, and lug soles. Serious rain cancels.

• Mission Peak Moonlight Conditioning Hike - Wednesday March 7, 7pm
Leaders: Casey Bialas (251-4619) Henry Schultz (284-5613).  Moderate 5 mi, 1200’ gain/loss to view city lights of San Fernando Vly. Meet 7 pm at trailhead. Take 405 Fwy to 118 Fwy, west to Balboa, north about 2 mi to Sesnon, west about 1 mi to Neon Wy, right to end of street. Bring water and lug soles. Rain cancels.
 
• Placerita Canyon Loop - Sun, March 11,  9AM
Leaders: Ed Benison (254-7517) Teresa Prosciewicz (250-1881).  Moderate to strenuous 8-mile loop, 1600’ gain in the western end of the San Gabriel Mtns. Excellent views of the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys, and possibly Santa Catalina Island. Meet 9am at Placerita Canyon Nature Center. Take I-5 to 14 Frwy, exit Placerita Cyn, turn right, and drive about 2 miles to park. Bring water, lunch and lug soles. Rain cancels.

• Burkhart Punchbowl Trail - Sun, March 25,  8AM
Leaders: Ken Kerner (251-5156) Ray Lorme (296-0246).  Moderate 7mi round trip, 1200’ gain to the Devil’s Chair and Holcomb Cyn. Spectacular scenery, high desert and pine forest area. Meet 8am at Canyon Country Rideshare. Take I-5 to Hwy 14, 14 to Sand Cyn, left to Von’s Shopping Ctr. Caravan/rideshare to trailhead. Need FSP*. Bring water, lunch and lug soles. Rain cancels..

• Sierra Pelona Ridge from Bouquet Canyon via Pacific Crest Trail - Sun, Apr 1,  9AM
Leaders: Henry Schultz (284-5613) Donica Wood (251-6462).  Moderate 6mi, 1200’ gain with gorgeous views of Bouquet Cyn, and possibly wild flowers. Meet 9am at entrance Ed Davis/Towsley Cyn St Pk. Take I-5 to Calgrove, west to The Old Rd, left to Park entrance. Rideshare/caravan to trailhead. Need FSP*. Rain cancels. Bring water, lunch, and lug soles.

• Mine Gulch Trail - Sun, Apr 8, 8AM
Leaders: Ken Kerner (251-5156) Henry Schultz (284-5613).  Moderate to strenuous 9mi, 2000’ loss/gain. Explore the headwaters of the East Fork San Gabriel River, down Vincent Gulch, through the Sheep Mountain Wilderness area. Trail rugged in spots. Meet 8am at Canyon Country Rideshare. Carpool/caravan to trailhead at Vincent Gap. Bring water, lunch, and lug soles. Need FSP*. Rain cancels.
