Pico Canyon Oak

To get a sense of the scale of this giant Valley Oak, notice SCOPE President Lynne Plambeck standing at the trunk base! Height is estimated at 70 feet, dripline diameter at least 100 feet. Age is between 400 and 500 years.

This oak will be moved to make room for widening of Pico Canyon Road to a major secondary highway

To view this heritage oak, exit McBean Parkway from I-5 and head west.  Continue about 1-1/2 miles (the road changes name to Stevenson Ranch Parkway).  Veer right at the end of SR Paarkway, and you willl be on Pico Canyon Road.  About 200 yards up you will be at the roadblock.  Park on a sidestreet (watch for No Parking signs).

Our readers may wish to continue a few miles further and visit the historic town of Mentryville, now owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. It was established in the 1800s during the oil boom in California.
